A visual style for a product owner

The problem: AI-made websites converge. Same frames, same lines, same proportions, same tasteful gradients — including the previous version of this one. A page built from defaults says nothing, because a word every candidate can use identifies no candidate, and the same holds for pixels.

The brief I gave the work: post-punk in philosophy, not in costume — simplicity, defiance of the common norms, grit, boldness — and one hard rule: no element without a job. If a line, a color, or a letterform doesn't communicate, it goes.

01 · Four concepts, mutually exclusive

One page, four ways to refuse

Escalating risk, from hireable-radical to outright provocation. Each prototype takes one post-punk move and commits to it completely.

02 · Words before visuals

The recognitions

Before choosing pixels, the language had to stop being generic. A lexical contrast of this site against the standard register of senior-PM summaries showed the fingerprint words living in the basement while the genre words (product, growth, value, impact) held the title positions. Recognition is surprisal: the fix was architectural.

Five literary operations — Gaddis's authentication, Burroughs's cut-up, Vonnegut's defamiliarization, Duchamp's readymade, Burgess's immersion — each generated one candidate language. What survived into this site: the remainder (everything new arrives before its department exists), refusal at frequency, and the two-channel split between pages for humans and the CV for the machines.

03 · The system

Opalescence: color is time

Named for critical opalescence — the shimmer a fluid shows just before a phase transition. One rule builds the whole system: everything realized is monochrome ink; the only color permitted anywhere is the opal, and it may mark exactly one thing — what has arrived but not yet manifested. A reader learns the rule without being told, and then the page can point at the future silently.

Three registers of the same system: the instrument (light, charts, the canon) · survival (dark signs — this site's register) · the tribunal (painterly, an inner dialog in moral grey)

04 · The face

Manifest — one axis, and it isn't weight

A variable font cut in code for this system: 47 glyphs, two masters, 4.5 KB. Its single axis is MNFS — manifestation. At 100 the strokes are solid ink: the record. Toward 0 they scatter into dashes, then dots: the not-yet. Across this site, a project's title is set at its honest manifestation — shipped names are solid, work in progress dissolves, plans are ghosts. Publishing something literally materializes it.

The future arrives unlabeled

100 · solid

05 · The result

What survived

The current site is the merge: the Refusals' voice and dark ground, the Recognitions' language, Opalescence's one-color rule, and Manifest carrying honesty in its letterforms. From the losing concepts, the parts that earned their keep: the catalogue's restraint in the work section, the working copy's contempt for polish, the manual's refusal to decorate.

Nothing on the page is a style. Everything is a claim.
